At the turn of the year, we often look back to the achievements of the previous year and look forward to the potential of the next.

In the growing Parc Felindre Swansea area, we can compare the development of this regeneration of land for business to Swansea’s historic Castle and the regeneration and development of Castle Square.

Parc Felinder OverheadBoth were originally the scene of an older period of history, people and industry and both are part of a new strategic period of renewal and regeneration.

Parc Felindre is quality business land – redeveloped and landscaped within earshot of the living artery of the M4, the key east-west trade route of contemporary business growth and entrepreneurial endeavour. The link can be easily drawn with Swansea Castle an historic headquarters, built on the banks of the River Tawe –the key east-west lifeline for trade, commerce and kingdom growth and the new regeneration plans for its Castle Square.

Swansea CastleOnce a mighty fortress of great strategic importance, it is difficult to envisage today its original location on a clifftop above where the River Tawe used to flow, controlling a harbour and important east–west route along southern Wales.1

Swansea Castle (Welsh: Castell Abertawe), was originally a wooden structure, built in 1107 by Henry de Beaumont as the ‘headquarters’ of his lordship of Gower, right in the centre of Swansea, Wales.

After damage in various battles, the ‘new’ castle was rebuilt in stone  by the English circa 1220. Today, only the remnants of the later castle, built in the late 13th century, now remain, creating an historic border to the public space of Castle Square. As a Scheduled Ancient Monument, it was given a Grade I heritage listing in 1952.2

Castle Square 1Still overlooked by the ancient remains of Swansea Castle, this year, an exciting new plan lies ahead for Castle Square Swansea. The modern landscaping and regeneration of this accessible public space will revive its colourful history.

Castle Square will be transformed, featuring a substantial increase in green space including lawns and planting. A new water feature for interactive play, plus new outdoor seating areas, a giant new TV screen above a bandstand facility, the retention of public use space and two new pavilion buildings for food, drink or retail businesses will complete the appealing new facilities.3

Castle Square will provide a boost to city centre footfall and help attract more shops and other businesses just as Parc Felindre enjoys the clever regeneration of green and sustainable  planning – an asset to all those businesses looking forward to a greener new year.

Councillor  Rob Stewart (pictured), Swansea Council Leader said (edited):

“We know how important Swansea city centre is for local residents and the people who work there…

“That will then create the footfall that’s needed there to safeguard our existing businesses and attract more shops and other businesses in future, helping to tackle challenges like online shopping…

“These projects and many others will add to everything that’s been achieved in recent years which includes the opening of Swansea Arena and the reopening of both the Albert Hall and the Palace Theatre building.

“It’s all part of our commitment to create a thriving city centre and generate more jobs and opportunities for local people.”

Business at Parc Felindre will gain from this investment in commercial enterprise, continuing the extensive regeneration of renewal too benefit  business and public alike.
