You can’t get more genuinely iconic than Welsh Lamb. Welsh sheep and lamb farming forms a fundamental part in the history, heritage, and culture of Wales. It is a way of life and an integral part of the rich Welsh agricultural tapestry. We are seen by the world as the lamb experts and we carry this accolade with pride, having passed knowledge down through generations of family farmers.1

Across the country, the Christian festival of Easter, symbolising Christ’s death and resurrection, is traditionally celebrated with a feast of roast lamb. The Jewish Passover predated the Christian festival and was also instituted with a lamb roasted and eaten to symbolise sacrifice and redemption.

Here are some key reasons why Welsh lamb is considered a genuine icon of Welsh premium quality, and forms a fundamental part in the history, heritage, and culture of Wales.2

  • Protected Geographical
Indication (PGI) Awarded PGI for Welsh lamb in 2003, Welsh products with GI status can claim the distinctive quality, authenticity and heritage of their natural place of origin.
  • Natural Grazing
Welsh lamb is raised in natural pastures with fresh air and natural grassland, which enhances flavour and tenderness.
  • Traditional Farming Methods
The Lamb are raised outdoors, grass fed using high animal welfare standards and sustainability.
  • Versatility
In the kitchen Welsh lamb is incredibly versatile and suitable for a range of dishes, from the superb classic roast to quick midweek suppers, adapting well to a variety of cuisine styles from Welsh to Indian and the Mediterranean.

Meat promotion Wales in Japan

In fact Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) represented PGI Welsh Lamb at Foodex Japan 2026, at the Tokyo Big Sight Exhibition Centre.  The Welsh Government Food & Drink delegation, strengthened Wales’s presence in one of its most important global markets. Japan remains one of HCC’s three premium international markets and continues to be a priority for strategic development. Over the past year, Wales’s branded presence has grown significantly, with Welsh Lamb sales increasing year-on-year. 3

Pioneering New Technology

The Welsh Government has confirmed £3 million of funding over the next three financial years to continue the Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme (WSGP). This programme will support supporting Welsh sheep farmers to improve efficiency, productivity and environmental performance.

From April 2026, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) will take the lead on Phase 2 of the programme. This new phase will deliver support for existing participants whilst opening the programme to new flocks. Farmers will benefit from practical, technical and financial assistance to harness the power of Genomic Estimated Breeding Values — cutting-edge genetic tools that enable more informed decisions at farm level. The genetic data gathered will strengthen industry benchmarking and support long-term business planning.4

Phase 2 will also see performance indicators, farm-level action planning, and research projects designed to drive innovation across the sector.

The programme's objectives are closely aligned with the Sustainable Farming Scheme, which launched on 1 January 2026, and with HCC's Vision 2030 — underscoring a shared commitment to a productive, sustainable and competitive Welsh red meat industry.

Phase 1 of the WSGP, launched in 2023, has delivered:

  • Introduced genomics into the sheep sector for the first time anywhere in the world
  • Generated the highest number of genotypes on the AHDB‑Signet database—70,000 across Tier 1 and Tier 2 flocks since 2023.
  • Developed two cutting‑edge research strands worm resistance and reduced methane emissions.
  • Working in partnership with specialists, such as Innovis and AHDB‑Signet.
  • Driven measurable genetic gains and improvements in performance traits across participating flocks.

This investment also underpins the Welsh Government’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the production of high‑quality, sustainable PGI Welsh Lamb.

Huw Irranca

Deputy First Minister for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca‑Davies, said: “This funding demonstrates our commitment to supporting farmers to build profitable, resilient businesses while delivering on our climate ambitions. The Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme shows what is possible when cutting‑edge science meets the proud tradition of Welsh livestock farming. By helping farmers breed healthier, more productive flocks with a lower environmental footprint, we are strengthening food security and safeguarding our rural economy for the long term.”

José Peralta, Chief Executive of Hybu Cig Cymru, said: “This next step directly supports a core priority in our new strategic plan - to develop and lead the implementation of initiatives that improve economic and environmental sustainability. We look forward to working closely with farmers to ensure they have the tools, insights, and support needed to thrive in the years ahead.”
